Foundation

Foundation

Every home needs a good foundation. It holds the weight of the structure that protects you from the rain, wind, heat, cold and more. As the home ages the foundation can weaken, letting in those same elements. And we all know that to prevent this is to keep up the maintenance on the home.

The same is true for our spirit or soul. A while back I work up with the memories of a dream fading away. I knew it would be gone once I became fully awake, and normally I don’t care. This time I wrote down two words that stuck in my brain – foundation and inventory.

As with most dreams, things tend to not make sense. Some say it’s our brain’s way of organizing the day’s activities or worries. All I remember is fading images of someone walking me through a home, pointing out the fine workmanship and elegance of design until we got to the basement. Needless to say, the foundation was not looking too well, nor did it look like it would last very much longer under the stress.

Foundation? What does it mean? I realized it’s not my home or any building, but the foundation of my faith, my spirit, my soul. This world is not our home, but everyday can be a challenge to our ability to deal with things, especially these last couple years. The fear factor has been cranked to its highest level yet. I have found the best way to build a good foundation for the soul is to have faith in God. Let Him guide you though the rough journeys as well as the joyful ones.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:13 ESV

To build a stronger foundation, read the Bible. Attend church. Participate with a study group. If you have a smart phone, download a Bible app, and choose a reading plan.

You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.

2 Peter 3:17 ESV

My favorite saying when I feel my ‘foundation’ crumbling, Let Go, Let God!

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV
